How to find viral reels in your niche

Every niche has reels going viral right now, and almost none of them come from the accounts you already follow. This guide covers how to find them: the manual methods that work, the metric that separates genuinely viral formats from big-account noise, and how to turn what you find into content of your own.

Why your feed is the wrong place to look

The For You page and the Reels feed are personalised to what you will watch, not to what is objectively working in your niche. They over-serve big accounts, content you have already engaged with, and whatever the algorithm is testing on you today. Research by feed is research through a funhouse mirror.

Worse, the feed hides the most useful signal there is: how a reel performed relative to the account that posted it. A million views from a creator with two million followers is a normal Tuesday. A million views from a creator with four thousand followers is a format the algorithm pushed on merit, and that format is the thing worth studying.

The manual methods, honestly assessed

Search is the strongest manual tool. Both platforms rank search results partly by engagement, so searching your niche's core terms and filtering to recent uploads surfaces reels that are earning attention now. Plan on repeating this across many phrasings, because each query shows you one narrow slice.

Sound pages and hashtag pages tell you what is trending, but they mix every niche together, and by the time a sound is obviously trending the early advantage is mostly gone. They are better for confirming a trend than for finding one.

Competitor watching, keeping a list of accounts in your niche and checking their top posts, is useful context but structurally backwards: it only shows you formats after someone in your list has already won with them, and it never shows you the breakout creators you have not heard of yet, who are where new formats appear first.

The honest summary: manual research works, it just costs hours per week and still misses everything outside the slices you thought to check.

The metric that matters: views to followers

Whatever method you use, judge what you find with one ratio: views divided by the creator's follower count. It is the cleanest proxy for how far the algorithm pushed a reel beyond the audience the creator already owned.

Under 1x, the reel mostly reached existing followers: audience, not format. A few multiples above is a good reel. At 50x and beyond you are looking at a true outlier: distribution the format earned entirely on its own. Those are rare, and they are the highest-signal research object in short-form content, because whatever they did is working right now and is provably not dependent on audience size.

This is the bar Nouvel builds into every scan: reels whose views are at least 50x the creator's followers wear an outlier badge with the real multiplier. If the data does not clear the bar, there is no badge, and nothing is ever estimated or padded.

From found reel to filmable format

A viral reel is only useful once you can name why it worked. Watch each outlier and separate three layers: the hook, meaning what earned the first two seconds; the structure, meaning how the reel holds attention beat by beat; and the surface, meaning the topic, the person and the aesthetic. The first two layers transfer to your content. The surface is theirs, and copying it is how you end up with a worse version of someone else's reel.

Remake the mechanism with your own surface: your subject, your voice, your product. This is also exactly what Nouvel's analysis does with an analysis credit, turning any reel in your results into a breakdown of hook, structure and pacing you can hand to whoever films.

Make it a weekly loop, not a binge

Formats decay. The teams that win short-form run discovery as a loop: scan the niche weekly, note which outlier formats are new since last week, remake one or two with your own surface, and let your own results tell you which mechanisms fit your audience. An hour a week of honest outlier research beats a day a month of feed scrolling, every time.

If you want the loop without the hours, that is the product: Nouvel scans TikTok and Instagram Reels for your niche in plain language, returns up to 20 relevant reels with real performance data, and flags the outliers. The free plan includes 3 scan credits and 3 analysis credits every month.
